If you have no intention of venturing off-road, consider a road bike designed for speed and fluidity on street and paved tracks.
Additionally, many kid's bikes are styled after mountain-bike specs, with fat tires and compact frames. Most, however, lack the suspension and off-road prowess that set mountain bikes apart from other categories of bicycles. Teens will easily be able to find the right fit in an adult mountain bike.
The best bikes for teenagers will depend on the type of riding they want to do. There are bikes for cycling, mountain bikes, town bikes and freestyle bikes. For general riding, a mountain bike is ideal because it can handle the road as well as off-road riding. Mountain bikes can also handle heavy abuse.
Town bikes are stylish and good for cruising on the road but they are not efficient for jumping and abuse. Freestyle bikes are for teens who want to jump, use ramps and learn tricks. Cycling bikes are not designed for jumping, but they are ideal if the teen is commuting long distances on the road.
Mountain bikes are the best all-around choice for teens. They can handle a variety of riding situations and are durable.
Teenage girls don't ride bikes. Several years ago, the National Children's Bureau published research that revealed that on average, boys cycle 138 miles a year and girls only 24 miles.
